Aim

To provide a knowledge of the principles of fire safety and fire science. This will allow learners to gain an understanding of the concepts of fire prevention and fire protection and prepare them to undertake further fire safety training.

Objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of fire and the combustion process
  • Understand the risk assessment process
  • Comprehend the mechanism of smoke production and characteristics of smoke movement
  • Recognise the hazards presented by fire and smoke within the built environment
  • Describe the characteristics of human behaviour in response to fire
  • Identify the principles of fire safety and the concepts used to protect from building occupants fire
  • Understand the principles of fire resistance and fire protection
  • Recognise the importance of sound fire safety management
