IOSH managing safely

IOSH Managing Safely is a 3-day IOSH-approved safety-training course that will give learners the knowledge they need to help ensure health and safety is achieved and maintained in the workplace and prevent accidents It is designed for managers and supervisors with responsibility for people or processes and will provide a basic, but broad and sound understanding of current H&S requirements and principles and a structured approach to the management of of health and safety.

The course is of particular value to all estates and facilities managers and supervisors.

Course contents

Over the three days the course takes you through the required stages in managing safely in a logical and structured fashion, and covers:

  • Responsibilities and accountabilities - requirements of managers with regard to health and safety
  • Legal requirements - health and safety law
  • Risk assessment - key steps and control strategies
  • Health and safety management systems - benefits and key elements
  • Accident causation and investigation – root cause and human factors
  • Hazards in the workplace – identification and control
  • Monitoring – using active and reactive measures to monitor health and safety performance;

How the course is assessed

Two assessments are completed, an end of course examination, plus a risk assessment exercise completed in the workplace and returned to the assessor within two weeks of completion of the course.

This course is for Authorised Persons (Confined Spaces) who require an introduction to the safety rules and procedures for working in confined spaces, ensuring a safe system of work is implemented, managed and controlled by competent persons. It meets the main requirements of JSP 375, SNHS/NHS confined space procedures and many other similar company procedures along with the Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) L101.

It is aimed at operatives who may need to carry out a medium risk confined space entry which will require the use of gas monitoring and will require the carrying of escape breathing apparatus (ie. foul and storm water sewerage systems).
