Large porous load sterilizers - quarterly testing (to NHS guidance)
This course is aimed at National Health staff and contractors required to perform the duties of a Competent Person (Decontamination) as defined in NHS Guidance. Pharmaceutical staff could find this course of benefit as evidence of training.
Description
Aim
To enable delegates to carry out the recommended daily, weekly and quarterly testing procedures on large* porous load sterilizers in accordance with NHS Guidance.
Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:
- Explain the role of sterilization within the decontamination process
- Relate the properties of steam to its saturation temperature and its pressure
- Define terms most commonly used in basic microbiology and sterilization
- Assess possible hazards associated with large porous load autoclaves and their engineering services
- Explain the main responsibilities of key personnel involved with sterilization equipment
- Calibrate and use specified test equipment
- Carry out periodic testing to quarterly level and complete associated records
- Correctly interpret test results and explain certification responsibilities

*Large porous load sterilizers are those that can accommodate one or more rectangular boxes measuring 300 x 300 x 600mm of volume 54 litres.
Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of large porous load sterilizers and steam sterilization.
