Water hygiene awareness for healthcare
Health Technical Memorandum 04-01 requires that any person working on the water distribution systems or cleaning and flushing water outlets must undergo adequate training so that they can gain an understanding of the need for good hygiene. This course is for individuals who require an understanding of water hygiene and microbiological control appropriate to their roles and responsibilities.
Description
The course is particularly suitable for estates and facilities managers and supervisors and operatives who work with or on water distribution systems, outlets and associated equipment, including cleaning, flushing, maintenance and repair.
It will also be appropriate for nurses, healthcare assistants, infection control staff and contractors.
Aim
To provide an understanding of the importance of managing water hygiene risks and how best practice guidance HTM 04-01 can be applied to achieve compliance and to protect patients, visitors and staff whilst carrying out their roles and responsibilities.
Objectives
By the end of this course attendees will be able to :
- State the requirements of legislation, regulation and mandatory requirements.
- Describe the prominent waterborne pathogens and the consequence of contamination of the water systems.
- Explain the ways in which water distribution systems, outlets, components and associated equipment can become contaminated.
- Describe the responsibilities of individuals to prevent contamination of the water distribution system and outlets and assist in ensuring control. measures in place are effective.
- Understand the value of appropriate personal hygiene, cleanliness of equipment, tools, materials and storage.
